Mississippi drivers urged to follow school bus stopping rules to protect children
Mississippi drivers are reminded to obey school bus safety laws, which require stopping when a bus displays flashing red lights and a stop arm. These signals mean drivers must come to a complete stop at least 10 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the lights are off, the stop arm is retracted, and children are clear of the roadway, according to state law.
The only exception is on divided highways with two or more lanes in each direction separated by a median. Drivers traveling in the opposite direction may pass a stopped bus on such roads.
Drivers behind a school bus must stop at all times, even if they are running late. Failure to comply with Mississippi Code ยง 63-3-615 endangers children and can result in legal penalties, authorities warn.
Officials emphasize slowing down, paying attention, and prioritizing student safety to prevent accidents and protect children on school transportation routes.
