Toppers sweep doubleheader, take SSAC series from Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Blue Mountain Christian rallied after a 16-9 opening loss to sweep a Saturday doubleheader and take the SSAC series from Faulkner, winning 11-5 and 11-4, the school reported.

The Toppers used a seven-run second inning in the first game of the doubleheader to seize control. Jake Meilstrup delivered a two-run double and Cody Presley hit a two-run home run; Presley and Meilstrup each drove in three runs.

On the mound, Chris Matthews threw a complete game, seven innings, to earn the win in the 11-5 victory. Blue Mountain Christian said the offense continued to add runs in the middle innings to build a commanding lead.

In the nightcap, the Toppers broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Yaidel Perez, Presley and Jarrett Morris had RBIs in the frame, and Presley added a sacrifice fly later. Ross Polizzi went 4-for-6 with an RBI, Presley was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, Perez had two RBIs and Meilstrup scored twice.

Benji Webb tossed 8.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits to earn the win, and Christian Maness recorded the final two outs. Blue Mountain Christian combined for 22 runs on 20 hits across the doubleheader, according to the school. The Toppers travel to Freed-Hardeman in Tennessee on Tuesday, April 14, at 5 p.m. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
