Toppers rally, lose on walk-off at Mobile
Mobile, Ala. — Blue Mountain Christian University rallied from an early deficit but fell 6-5 on a ninth-inning walk-off in the final game of the SSAC series Saturday, the Blue Mountain Christian athletics release said.
Mobile scored in the third and added two runs in the fifth to build a 3-0 lead. Blue Mountain Christian answered in the sixth when Jake Meilstrup hit a two-RBI single that scored Yaidel Perez and Ethan Hirons, cutting the deficit to one. The Toppers took the lead in the seventh on a two-RBI single by Perez that scored Cody Presley and Ross Polizzi, and Trace Roy followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3.
Mobile cut the lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh and tied the game in the eighth. In the ninth, the Rams capitalized on a defensive miscue to score the winning run and complete the walk-off, the release said.
Blue Mountain Christian collected 12 hits. Roy went 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Meilstrup finished 1-for-5 with two RBIs, and Perez was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gavin Foley had two hits, and Polizzi, Presley, Bryant and Reise Thomas each recorded a hit.
On the mound, Benji Webb threw 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Christian Manness worked in relief and allowed one run while striking out one. Morris threw the final inning and was charged with the loss, the release said.
Despite the tough finish, the Toppers showed resilience and will travel to play at Rust College on March 17. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
