Toppers lose to No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett in Friday doubleheader
Blue Mountain Christian lost both games of a Friday doubleheader to No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett College in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, the school said. Facing one of the NAIA’s top programs, the Toppers showed resilience and timely offense but came up short in each contest.
In the opener, Georgia Gwinnett built momentum early, scoring in multiple innings while BMC finished with nine hits, the release said. Jake Meilstrup went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored. Ross Polizzi drove in the Toppers’ first run with an RBI single in the sixth inning, and Trace Roy crossed the plate in the seventh. On the mound, Benji Webb worked four innings and recorded three strikeouts, with Caden Moore adding a scoreless inning in relief.
The nightcap produced one of BMC’s most productive offensive performances of the season, the school said. The Toppers totaled 10 hits and scored in four innings. Meilstrup finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and five RBIs. Cody Presley had two hits and a run scored, and Reise Thomas, Ethan Hirons and Yaidel Perez each drove in runs. Pitchers Chip Harris, Judson Griffin and Jesse Hancock combined to cover the game, with Hancock providing steady late work.
Friday’s doubleheader served as an early-season test against elite competition as BMC continues to build experience, the release said. The Toppers are scheduled to face Georgia Gwinnett again Saturday at 1 p.m. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
