Toppers fall to Christian Brothers, tie nightcap after extra innings

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Blue Mountain Christian fell 9-8 to Division II Christian Brothers and played to a 6-6 tie in the nightcap that was called after eight innings because of darkness on Tuesday, the school reported.

Game one featured momentum swings as both teams traded big innings. Christian Brothers scored first, but Aspen Teague tied it with a solo home run in the second and Bre Ramsey followed with a two-run homer to give the Toppers a 3-1 lead. The Buccaneers responded with runs in the third and fourth to take a 5-3 edge.

Blue Mountain Christian rallied in the sixth, plating five runs after loading the bases, highlighted by Anna Harrison driving in two on a play that reached on an error and Mikaylah Fuqua adding an RBI single for an 8-5 lead. Christian Brothers tied it in the seventh and scored the deciding run in the eighth. Neely Cooper worked the first 3.1 innings and Jana Shaw finished with 3.2 innings in relief. Teague finished with three hits and a home run, Kelsey Camp had two hits, Ramsey drove in two and Fuqua had two hits and an RBI.

The nightcap saw the Toppers jump out early. Fuqua delivered an RBI single in the first and Harrison added an RBI single in the second. Kelsey Camp’s two-run single in the fourth pushed the lead to 6-3. Christian Brothers cut the lead with a two-run homer in the fifth and tied it in the seventh. Gail Wisher pitched all seven innings for Blue Mountain Christian, allowing six runs and striking out five. Harrison went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

The loss was Blue Mountain Christian’s first of the season. The school said the teams played competitively through an extra-inning nightcap before the game was halted for lack of field lights. Blue Mountain Christian is scheduled to play Rhodes College on March 11. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
