Faulkner sweeps Blue Mountain Christian in SSAC opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Faulkner University swept Blue Mountain Christian in Southern States Athletic Conference play Saturday, beating the Toppers 2-0 and 12-2 in a doubleheader at Faulkner.

In the opener, Faulkner edged Blue Mountain Christian 2-0 in a pitching duel. The Toppers managed three hits, led by Anna Harrison, who went 2-for-3 with a double, and Neely Barrier, who also doubled, Blue Mountain Christian said.

Madison Montgomery pitched a complete six innings for the Eagles, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits, the school said. Faulkner broke through with a run in the fourth and added an insurance run on a solo home run in the fifth to secure the victory.

In the nightcap, Faulkner used timely hitting to take a 12-2 victory in five innings, plating four runs in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth. Blue Mountain Christian scored two runs, including an RBI double by Mikaylah Fuqua; Aspen Teague recorded a hit and Laklyn Nichols scored, the school said.

Blue Mountain Christian finished game two with four hits and was charged with six errors, which extended innings and allowed Faulkner additional opportunities. Neely Cooper started and recorded four strikeouts, with Jana Shaw working in relief, the school said. Blue Mountain Christian is scheduled to play Freed-Hardeman on March 17 at 3 p.m. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
