National Weather Service issues significant fire danger for most of Mississippi

The National Weather Service issued a significant fire danger alert for most of Mississippi on Saturday, March 28, 2026, effective from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Officials warned that open burning should not be attempted because fires are more likely to spread under the conditions cited in the alert. The notice advised residents to follow local burn bans, secure tow chains and dispose of cigarettes properly to reduce the risk of accidental ignitions.

The National Weather Service routinely issues fire danger statements when conditions increase the likelihood that a small spark or ember could grow into a rapidly spreading blaze. Such conditions often occur when vegetation is dry, winds are stronger and humidity is low, making outdoor fires harder to control.

Local fire departments and forestry agencies typically enforce burn bans and may respond to increased calls during high fire danger periods. Residents in affected areas should avoid outdoor burning and exercise caution when operating vehicles or equipment that could produce sparks. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
