MDWFP proposes habitat projects to boost wild turkey populations statewide
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks proposed habitat enhancement projects aimed at supporting wild turkey populations across the state. The agency said the efforts are designed to improve nesting cover, expand brood-rearing habitat and increase food availability for wild turkeys.
MDWFP is the state agency responsible for managing Mississippi’s wildlife and aquatic resources, administering hunting seasons and leading habitat conservation initiatives. Wild turkeys are a managed game species in the state and their well-being influences both recreational hunting and local ecosystems.
Habitat enhancement addresses the specific needs of wild turkeys at different life stages. Nesting cover provides concealment for eggs and hens, brood-rearing habitat offers insects and protective vegetation for poults, and greater food availability supports adult survival and reproduction. Conservation programs commonly use practices such as timber management, controlled burning and planting of mast- and seed-producing species to improve those conditions.
Details about locations, timelines and funding were limited in the initial announcement. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
