Honor life, legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
A Facebook post marking the federal holiday said, “Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a Day of Service, reminding us that positive change begins with serving others and strengthening our community through unity, respect, and compassion.”
Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader of the American civil rights movement who advocated nonviolent protest to end racial segregation and expand voting rights. He delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, achievements that helped shape national policy and public consciousness.
Observed as a federal holiday and promoted as a national Day of Service, the annual observance encourages people and organizations to volunteer in their communities, reflect on racial equality and pursue civic engagement. The holiday is typically observed on the third Monday in January to coincide with King’s birthday.
The Facebook post highlighted service, unity, respect and compassion as ways to honor King’s work and urged people to strengthen their communities. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
