Facebook post urges review of tornado plans as statewide drill won’t occur
A Facebook post says there will not be a statewide tornado drill this morning and encourages residents to review their tornado plans and safe spaces.
The short notice highlights the importance of individual preparedness. Tornadoes can develop rapidly, and preparedness measures such as knowing where to take shelter and having a family communication plan can reduce risk when severe weather strikes.
Emergency management officials generally advise identifying a safe room — such as a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor away from windows — and assembling an emergency kit with water, food, flashlights, extra batteries and important documents. Officials also recommend monitoring weather alerts from the National Weather Service and local authorities and keeping mobile phones charged to receive warnings.
The Facebook post did not provide additional details about the reason for canceling the drill. Individuals are urged to use the time to refresh household plans, review evacuation routes and confirm safe spaces. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
