Mississippi Development Authority celebrates Economic Development Week
To recognize the important role economic development plays in the growth and prosperity of the state, Gov. Tate Reeves proclaimed May 8-12 as Economic Development Week in Mississippi. The proclamation is in conjunction with the International Economic Development Council’s Economic Development Week.
“Mississippi set economic development records last year,” said Gov. Reeves. “We brought in a record of over $6 billion in new capital investment and finalized the largest economic development project in our state’s history. We’re working hard every day to bring new businesses and investments to our state, and we’re not going to take our foot off the gas pedal. I was proud to proclaim May 8–12 as Economic Development Week in Mississippi.”
The proclamation and Economic Development Week highlight the significant contributions of economic developers to communities and their efforts to increase the quality of life for all residents.
“As the state’s lead economic development agency, MDA understands the critical role economic developers play in driving economic growth and job creation,” said MDA Deputy Executive Director Laura Hipp. “We are thrilled to join the governor and IEDC in recognizing Economic Development Week and celebrating the important work of our industry.”
Mississippi has a robust economic development industry with numerous professionals and organizations dedicated to enhancing the state’s economy. These organizations and professionals have helped the state receive over $6 billion in corporate investments, which has helped the state reach the lowest unemployment rate in its history.
These investments include a corporate investment of $2.5 billion by Steel Dynamics in the Golden Triangle Region. The investment currently is the largest in the state’s history and will add over 1,000 jobs to the local economy.
Economic Development Week was created in 2016 by IEDC, the largest international professional trade association for economic developers. The initiative aims to raise awareness of local programs that create jobs, advance career development opportunities and improve the quality of life in communities across North America.
