McRae returns $1.3 million to counties impacted by recent storms

First money match of its kind in Mississippi history

March 25, 2025 – Treasurer David McRae announced the State Treasury has conducted a pro-active unclaimed money match in the counties affected by last week’s storms and will be returning the funds via check within the week. In total, the Treasury matched more than 5,000 checks, totaling $1.3 million. An unclaimed money match in storm-affected counties has never before been done in Mississippi.

“Like many Mississippians, I was raised to ‘Help Thy Neighbor,’ so just hours after the winds died down and families came up from basements and shelters to view the damage, our team went to work, leveraging the best tool the Treasury has in these situations; we tried to find these families money,” said McRae.

Unclaimed money is your money that has been lost at some point in the past. In some cases, unclaimed money was left in a savings or investment account. In other cases, it was an uncashed tax refund. Either way, the money belongs to you and McRae has prioritized returning it to its rightful owners as quickly and easily as possible.

Since taking office, McRae has returned more than $130 million, including $40 million last year alone. To search for unclaimed money in your name, visit treasury.ms.gov/search.

“I want to let those affected know that my thoughts are with you during this difficult time,” continued McRae. “I do believe we will eventually recover stronger than before because, like me, we were all taught from a young age to ‘Help Thy Neighbor.’”

These funds do not replace state or federal disaster aid. If a Mississippian receives the check, they are encouraged to cash it immediately. This is your money being returned to you.
