Greenwood Passes Mask Resolution
Yesterday, the City Council of Greenwood passed a resolution that will require those who are in a business or indoor public setting to wear a “clean face covering”. Masks will be mandatory in Greenwood city limits starting tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m.
The mandate states that face coverings do not have to be medical masks or N95 masks. People in Greenwood will be allowed to wear home-made masks, as well as bandanas, scarfs, or t-shirts as long as they properly cover the person’s mouth and nose.
While these policies will be enforced and violators are subject to misdemeanor prosecution with fines up to $1,000.00, there are exemptions to wearing a face covering in city limits.
Face coverings are not required for the following:
a. Those who cannot wear a face covering due to a medical or behavioral condition.
b. Restaurant patrons while dining.
c. Private, individual offices or offices with fewer than ten (10) employees.
d. Other settings where it is not practical or feasible to wear a face covering, including when obtaining or rendering goods or services, such as receipt of dental services, or swimming.
e. Banks, gyms, or spaces with physical barrier partitions which prohibit contact between the customer(s) and employee.
f. Small offices where the public does not interact with the employer.
g. Children under five (5).
As COVID-19 cases continuing to rise in Mississippi, cities across the state have been taking a stern approach in their policies to help fight the spread of the virus in hopes of keeping local businesses open. Due to Leflore County now having over 500 recorded cases, the new Greenwood mandate is aimed to help slow the spread of the virus in the city.
This isn’t the first COVID-19 mandate the city has passed. Earlier this year, Greenwood placed restrictions on businesses and residents in the city, as well as implementing a curfew. Violators of those offenses have had to pay fines, though these restrictions have since been lifted.
