Severe Weather Update #3
April 15, 2024 – 11 a.m.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency staff is validating damage numbers to determine if the state is eligible to apply for federal assistance following the April 9-10 tornadoes, severe weather, and flooding. During the validation process, the state is coordinating with non-governmental organizations and private non-profits to meet the needs of affected citizens. At the time of this release, two deaths and seven injuries have been reported to MEMA.
Damage numbers will fluctuate during the validation process. These counties report some damage to homes ranging from affected to destroyed:
- Carroll – 4 homes
- Grenada – 9 homes, 1 injury
- Hancock – 28 homes
- Harrison – 6 homes
- Holmes – 4 homes
- Humphreys – 8 homes
- Hinds– 59 homes
- Lafayette – 2 homes
- Leake – 6 homes
- Madison – 16 homes
- Marshall – 9 homes
- Neshoba – 24 homes
- Panola – 6 homes
- Rankin – 16 homes, 1 injury
- Scott- 53 homes, 1 death, 7 injuries
- Smith – 2 homes
- Warren – 17 homes
- Washington – 2 homes
- Yazoo – 15 homes
- TOTAL: 286 Homes
Statewide, 47 public roads, two public bridges, seven public buildings, and three non-profit utility companies were also damaged.
The National Weather Service has confirmed four tornadoes touched down in Mississippi between April 9-10.
- EF 0 tornado in Warren County (Oak Ridge)
- EF 1 tornado in Hinds County (Learned/Raymond)
- EF 0 tornado in Madison County (Mannsdale)
- EF 1 tornado in Harrison County (Wolf River)
During this event, MEMA has distributed the following commodities in response:
- Tarps – 190 tarps
- Bottled Water – 4,000 Bottles
- Sandbags – 100,000

April 11, 2024 – 4 p.m.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is working with counties to assess damage from the severe weather and flooding for April 9-10. At the time of this release, two deaths have been reported (Scott and Leflore) and six injuries due to the recent storms and flooding. The National Weather Service Jackson confirmed an EF 1 tornado in Hinds County (Learned on April 9) and an EF 0 tornado in Madison County (Mannsdale on April 10).
Statewide, counties have reported that 179 homes were damaged. Initial damage assessments are underway. The following is PRELIMINARY and will change through the assessment process. These counties report some damage to homes ranging from affected to destroyed:
- Grenada – 1 injury, 9 homes
- Harrison – 6 homes
- Holmes – 4 homes
- Hinds– 38 homes
- Madison – 16 homes
- Marshall – 9 homes
- Neshoba – 22 homes
- Rankin – 10 homes
- Scott– 1 death, 5 injuries, 45 homes
- Warren – 16 homes
- Yazoo – 4 homes
Scott County has a shelter open at Roosevelt State Park, 2149 MS-13, Morton, MS 39117. According to the American Red Cross, it will remain open until noon on April 12, 2024.
Yazoo County emergency officials report the dam is secure near the Eastbrook Subdivision off Highway 16 East.
April Severe Weather Update #1
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is working with counties to assess damage from the severe weather beginning on April 9. There are reports of homes damaged, trees down, roads blocked, and power outages due to the storms.
One death (Scott County) and one injury (Grenada County) have been reported to MEMA. Statewide, counties have reported 72 homes have been damaged.

- Scott– 1 death, 45 homes

MEMA encourages residents who’ve sustained damage after a severe weather event to do the following:
- File an insurance claim.
- Take photos of the damage to the home.
- Report damage to county/MEMA via the self-report tool.
