Yazoo County sheriff urges drivers to avoid roads amid severe winter weather threat
YAZOO CITY, Miss. — Sheriff Jeremy McCoy is urging drivers to stay off the roads if possible as the area faces a threat of severe winter weather, the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office said.
Yazoo County, in central Mississippi, relies on the sheriff’s office for emergency response, traffic enforcement and public safety coordination in both urban and rural areas. When winter storms threaten, local law enforcement often urges residents to limit travel to allow road crews and emergency services to operate more effectively.
Severe winter weather can create icy roads, reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions that increase the risk of crashes and stranded vehicles. Officials recommend that residents delay nonessential trips, allow extra travel time if travel is unavoidable and exercise caution near bridges and overpasses where ice can form first.
Motorists should monitor local weather forecasts and road condition reports, make sure their vehicles are prepared for cold weather and have an emergency kit on hand. For emergencies, contact local emergency services. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
