Wiggins Police open cold weather shelter Sunday

The Wiggins Police Department said in a Facebook post that it will open a cold weather shelter at the police station, 303 First St. S., Wiggins, Mississippi 39577, this Sunday at 6 p.m. The post said no pets are allowed inside the shelter and urged residents to spread the word.

Cold weather shelters provide temporary refuge for people who lack adequate heating or shelter during dangerous cold snaps. These sites are commonly operated by local governments, police departments or nonprofit organizations to reduce the risk of hypothermia and other cold-related health problems.

The Wiggins Police Department serves the city of Wiggins and surrounding areas and is coordinating the shelter opening to offer a warm place for anyone in need while cold conditions persist. The department’s Facebook post invited residents to bring people who may need shelter.

The post did not include additional logistical details such as how long the shelter will remain open or capacity limits. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
