Wesson hosts inaugural tablescape competition, silent auction for veterans

WESSON — The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 79 will host its first tablescape competition and silent auction May 1-2 as part of Wesson’s Founder’s Day celebration, organizers said. Proceeds from “The Heart of the Table” event will support veterans and community programs, including Girls State, the Auxiliary Emergency Fund, the Poppy Program, Wreaths Across America and the Veterans Affairs home in Collins.

The two-day event opens Friday, May 1, with contestants setting up tablescapes from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Old School. Judging is scheduled for Saturday morning, followed by a public exhibition from 1 to 5 p.m., during which attendees can vote for a People’s Choice winner. Admission and voting cost $1.

The silent auction begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the park, will close at 2 p.m., then reopen at 3 p.m. at the Historic Old School before concluding with a 5 p.m. ceremony announcing winners, organizers said. Family-friendly activities will include a photo booth, popcorn, educational displays about the American Legion Auxiliary’s mission, a children’s coloring station on Americanism and flag etiquette, and possible historical reenactments.

The tablescape competition is open to individuals, businesses and community groups. Entries will be judged on creativity, presentation, theme and craftsmanship; participants will design themed settings for round tables seating at least four people. Organizers are seeking sponsors, auction donations and monetary contributions; donors will be recognized in event materials and provided documentation for tax purposes.

The event is coordinated by a committee that includes Janet Currie, Dixie Thornton, Cathy Stroud and Judy Chester-Turner, organizers said. The American Legion Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that supports veterans, military families and youth programs. Organizers encourage community members to participate or attend.
