Warming centers open in Oxford; Lafayette County opens Saturday
City of Oxford warming centers are open now and Lafayette County warming centers will open Saturday, Jan. 24, at 9 a.m., city and county officials said. The locations are intended to provide temporary shelter for people seeking refuge from cold weather.
City of Oxford locations listed by officials include Oxford Police Department, 9 Industrial Park Drive; Oxford Fire Department Station 1, 399 McElroy Drive; Oxford Fire Department Station 2, 399 F.D. Buddy East Parkway; Oxford Fire Department Station 3, 139 Highway 7 South; and Oxford Fire Department Station 4, 200 Mall Drive.
Lafayette County locations set to open at 9 a.m. Saturday include Lafayette County Fire Department Station 1, 599 Highway 310; Station 6, 153 County Road 436; Station 11, 11 County Road 287; Station 15, 4 County Road 109; and Station 17, 8 County Road 4089.
Officials urged visitors to bring needed medications, a phone charger and a blanket or coat if available. In an emergency, call 9-1-1. For nonemergency assistance, callers should use their local agency’s nonemergency line.
Warming centers offer temporary relief during periods of dangerously low temperatures and are commonly used by people experiencing homelessness or others without heat. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
