Vicksburg police urge residents to avoid roads during ice storm

The Vicksburg Police Department is urging residents to stay off roadways during icy conditions and to take precautions to avoid accidents, the department said in a Facebook post.

Police advised motorists to avoid driving unless travel is absolutely necessary and warned that ice-covered roads can be extremely dangerous. The post also encouraged residents to sign up for the city’s emergency alert system, Hyper-Reach, for real-time updates.

The department provided registration instructions: City of Vicksburg residents should text ALERT to 601-429-0444, while those outside city limits should text ALERT to 601-429-2029 to receive emergency messages.

The Vicksburg Police Department, which provides public safety and emergency response services for the city in western Mississippi, routinely issues weather-related advisories when conditions threaten road safety and public welfare. Ice storms can cause hazardous travel, power outages and increased demand on emergency services, making advance alerts and caution important for residents.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
