Vicksburg police honor K9 veterans on National K9 Veterans Day

The Vicksburg Police Department recognized National K9 Veterans Day on March 13 with a post on its Facebook page highlighting the work of department K9s and their handlers.

The post identified K9 Crusoe (left) and K9 Nadia (right) and named their handlers as Lt. Heggins and Investigator Scallions. The department said the dogs are highly trained partners who assist with tracking and detection and help keep officers and the community safe.

K9 units are commonly used by law enforcement agencies for tasks such as tracking suspects, locating missing persons, detecting narcotics or explosives, and enhancing officer safety. Departments across the country use the annual observance to honor retired and active service dogs for their contributions to public safety.

The Vicksburg Police Department said it saluted all past and present K9s for their service and included photos of the dogs in the post. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
