U.S. 82 Eastbound closes at Old West Point Road; detour in place
Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said U.S. 82 Eastbound at Old West Point Road will close beginning Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026, at 6 a.m. The closure will affect the stretch between the Old Slush Creek Bridge and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Bridge and is expected to end before 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2026.
The sheriff’s office said deputies will monitor progress and notify the public as soon as the roadway reopens. Motorists are asked to follow posted detour signs, plan extra travel time and use caution while traveling in the area.
The posted detour for eastbound U.S. 82 will route traffic onto Highway 45 Alternate into West Point, then east on Highway 50 and south on Highway 45 to return to U.S. 82 East.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the local law enforcement agency overseeing public safety and traffic control in the county, posted the advisory on social media. This closure may affect commuters and commercial traffic that use U.S. 82 as a regional east-west route. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
