Tupelo man arrested on rape, sexual battery charges

TUPELO, Miss. — Authorities arrested a Tupelo man on charges of rape and sexual battery after a hospital report prompted an investigation, police said.

On Feb. 18, Tupelo police officers responded to North Mississippi Medical Center in reference to a previously reported sexual assault that allegedly occurred at a Tupelo home, police said. The victim provided officers with information identifying the alleged suspect.

After further investigation, officers arrested 34-year-old Juan Jose Cabral of Tupelo on Feb. 24 and charged him with one count of sexual battery and one count of rape, according to Tupelo police. Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Jay Weird ordered Cabral held on a $40,000 bond on Feb. 27, and the charges will be presented to the Lee County grand jury, authorities said.

North Mississippi Medical Center is a regional hospital that often serves as the initial reporting point for victims seeking treatment in northeast Mississippi. The grand jury will determine whether to return indictments; if indictments occur, the case would proceed toward arraignment and possible trial. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
