Treat dark traffic lights as four-way stops
A Facebook post Tuesday advised drivers who encounter an intersection with a nonworking traffic signal to treat it as a four-way stop, urging motorists to slow down, come to a complete stop, take turns proceeding and yield to pedestrians.
The post, labeled “Traffic Tip Tuesday,” also warned drivers to watch for others who may be unsure how to proceed and reminded motorists that when in doubt, patience can prevent crashes. The message did not identify an author.
Traffic safety experts say treating a dark signal as a four-way stop helps re-create the orderly flow normally enforced by the light. At a four-way stop, drivers generally proceed in the order they arrive; if two vehicles reach the intersection at the same time, the vehicle on the right typically goes first. Yielding to pedestrians remains a priority.
The guidance is especially relevant during power outages, storms or signal malfunctions when intersections can become hazardous. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
