Train kills Mississippi woman at Shelby County crossing

Authorities say a woman from Mississippi was killed Tuesday night in a crash involving a train in Shelby County.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told reporters there was a large law enforcement presence near the railroad crossing on County Road 433 in Chelsea shortly before 9 p.m., according to WBRC. The Shelby County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 31-year-old Michelle A. Manning, who had been living in Birmingham recently, WBRC reported.

The sheriff’s office said the crossing would be closed “for an extended period of time,” and WBRC later reported it had reopened by about 10:30 p.m. Deputies urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the scene was secured.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the crash, officials said. Railroad crossing collisions are routinely investigated to determine contributing factors, and agencies typically secure scenes while collecting evidence. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
