Tornado warning covers Covington, Jefferson Davis, Marion counties until 1:30 a.m.

A Facebook post said a tornado warning was in effect for Covington, Jefferson Davis and Marion counties in Mississippi until 1:30 a.m. CST. The post did not provide additional details about the warning’s source or any reported damage.

A tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar and that people in the warned area should take shelter immediately, the National Weather Service says. Warnings are issued when there is imminent danger to life and property.

Officials and weather safety experts advise people in the warning area to move to a small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, avoid windows and cover themselves with mattresses or heavy blankets if possible. Motorists should seek shelter in a nearby sturdy building and avoid trying to outrun a tornado in a vehicle.

Mississippi is located in the U.S. Southeast, a region that can experience severe thunderstorms and tornadoes at various times of the year. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
