Texas woman dies after vehicles hit detached trailer on U.S. 49

COVINGTON COUNTY, Miss. — A Texas woman was killed Monday morning when two vehicles struck a detached trailer from a tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 49, the Mississippi Highway Patrol said.

The patrol said the crash occurred about 5:06 a.m. on March 16 when a 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Filmon T. Abraha, 29, of Garland, Texas, briefly left the roadway while traveling south and then re-entered. When the vehicle returned to the roadway, the second trailer became detached and was left in the roadway.

A 2013 Nissan Altima driven by Lyle B. Wheat, 30, of Collins, was traveling south and collided with the detached trailer, the patrol said. A 2026 Kia Sportage driven by Arlene I. Turner, 67, of San Antonio, Texas, then struck the trailer. Abraha and Wheat were not injured.

Turner sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Covington County Coroner’s Office, authorities said. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
