Starkville police graduate Overstreet fifth-graders from D.A.R.E.
Cpl. Tonya McWhirter led fifth-graders at Overstreet Elementary through the D.A.R.E. keepin’ it REAL curriculum and two ceremonies at the school celebrated the students’ completion, the Starkville Police Department said in a Facebook post. Chief Mark Ballard and the department praised the young men and women for their commitment to making safe, healthy choices.
Each ceremony honored its own group of award recipients in categories that included Sticker Winners, Essay Winners, Star Students and Students of the Year, the post said. The events recognized academic effort, positive behavior and student leadership as part of the program’s wrap-up.
The department’s post extended special thanks to Principal Jennifer Carver, Mayor Lynn Spruill, Reagan Smith (MS State cheer), the Starkville High School Choir, Starkville High School JROTC, Overstreet faculty, families and others who helped organize the ceremonies.
D.A.R.E. is a school-based program designed to teach children skills for resisting drugs and making healthy choices. The Starkville Police Department said it is proud of the graduates. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
