Starkville motorcycle officer injured in collision during funeral escort

STARKVILLE, Miss. — A Starkville Police Department motorcycle officer was seriously injured in a traffic collision while assisting a funeral procession at 1:43 p.m. Feb. 21, the department said in a news release posted on Facebook.

The department said its motorcycle and a vehicle that was not part of the procession collided. The officer was transported by air to a medical facility in Jackson for further treatment and is listed in critical condition.

The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and declined medical treatment, the release said. The Starkville Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team will carry out a full reconstruction of the incident and the collision remains under investigation.

Motorcycle officers commonly assist with traffic control and escorts for funerals and other events, duties intended to protect participants and other motorists. The department asked the community to keep the officer and the officer’s family in their thoughts.
