Sleet, freezing rain leave city roads ice-covered
Sleet and freezing rain that fell most of the night left roads covered in ice across the city this morning, the city police department said. The department reported vehicles sliding off roadways in several areas and urged residents to avoid any unnecessary travel.
Police said they are operating under their inclement weather policy. Authorities advised drivers who must travel to slow down, allow extra time, and exercise increased caution to reduce the risk of crashes on icy surfaces.
Sleet and freezing rain can create a thin, hard layer of ice on pavement often called black ice, which is difficult to see and can cause vehicles to lose traction. Inclement weather policies used by emergency services commonly shift resources to prioritize serious incidents and adjust staffing to maintain response capability during hazardous conditions.
The police department asked residents to stay safe and follow travel advisories. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
