Severe storms threaten Coahoma County as Level three risk remains

A weather briefing posted Sunday on the Coahoma County Facebook page says an enhanced risk, Level three of five, remains in effect for Coahoma County this afternoon into tonight as a strong cold front moves through the region.

The briefing warns the primary threats include damaging winds with storms potentially exceeding 75 mph, embedded quick spin-up tornadoes, heavy rainfall in stronger storms and non-thunderstorm wind gusts ahead of and behind the front.

Officials said a fast-moving line of storms is expected to move west to east across the county this afternoon and early evening. Coahoma County is in northwest Mississippi in the Mississippi Delta; the briefing was prepared for county officials and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

The National Weather Service uses a five-level convective outlook; Level three denotes an enhanced risk of severe storms compared with lower levels. Residents should monitor local forecasts, follow guidance from emergency officials and have a plan for seeking shelter if conditions deteriorate. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
