Refreezing leaves some roads slippery this morning

Overnight refreezing left some roads slippery across the area this morning, authorities said in a Facebook post. Anything on the road that looks wet is likely ice, and hills may be difficult to navigate, the post said.

Officials reported mostly clear travel on Interstate 55 in both directions. Stateline, Goodman and Church roads were described as mostly passable, as were Highway 51, Airways and Getwell. The post warned that there are still icy patches in the open lanes and urged drivers to exercise caution.

Refreezing occurs when melted snow or water refreezes on road surfaces as temperatures drop, creating thin, hard-to-see layers of ice sometimes called black ice. Such conditions can make braking and steering difficult and increase the risk of collisions, particularly on bridges, overpasses and shaded areas.

Drivers are advised to reduce speed, allow extra following distance and avoid sudden maneuvers until conditions improve. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
