Rankin County Sheriff’s Office thanks Quilts for Cops for quilt for injured deputy

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department thanked Quilts for Cops for a handmade quilt presented to Deputy James Mooney after he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic, the department said.

Deputy Mooney, who serves as a school resource officer at McLaurin Schools on Star Road, has been recovering at home and was recently released to light duty, the department said in a Facebook post.

The department said Quilts for Cops, founded in 2016, is a nonprofit that makes handmade quilts and sends them to first responders nationwide — including police, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and K-9 units — who have been injured in the line of duty.

In its post, the department thanked the public for an outpouring of support following the incident and said demonstrations of support from organizations such as Quilts for Cops greatly affect staff morale. The post included a photograph of Chief Deputy Brian Whittington, Undersheriff Barry Vaughn, Deputy James Mooney and Sheriff Bryan Bailey.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
