Rankin County deputies assist locating body near Pearl River
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post that deputies assisted with locating a body found floating near the Pearl River.
The sheriff’s department is the primary law enforcement agency for Rankin County, Mississippi, responsible for patrol, investigations and emergency response across the county. The department often works with other local, state and regional agencies on water rescues and recovery operations.
The Pearl River is a major waterway that runs through central Mississippi into Louisiana. Bodies of water present unique hazards and investigative challenges, and discoveries of human remains on or near rivers typically prompt a coordinated response involving law enforcement, the county coroner or medical examiner and, when needed, specialized dive or water-rescue teams.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery, including the identity of the person and the cause of death, were not provided in the department’s post. The matter is under investigation. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
