Pike County detention center holds baptismal ceremony

Pike County Sheriff’s Office detained center held a baptismal ceremony Monday, officials said, in an event aimed at supporting inmate rehabilitation and spiritual growth.

Chaplain Brother Doug Hughes of First Baptist Church of Summit led the ceremony and presented the inmate with a Bible, the sheriff’s office said. The inmate’s grandmother attended the service, which the office described as a meaningful and heartfelt moment.

Officials thanked the Pike County Sheriff’s Office leadership team for supporting the event. “The Pike County Detention Center staff and myself desire to provide an environment for inmates that encourages and supports their rehabilitation and spiritual growth,” said Major Jewel Hines, Pike County Detention Center administrator.

“Again, I made a promise to the citizens of Pike County that I would do everything that I could to help rebuild our county to safety. This Baptism is a part of that promise,” said Sheriff Bryant “Wally” Jones.

Faith-based programs and chaplaincy services are commonly used in detention facilities to offer spiritual support and contribute to rehabilitation efforts. Officials said the ceremony represents part of the facility’s commitment to both public safety and the rehabilitation of those in its care. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
