Person airlifted after vehicle overturns on Highway 61 South in Coahoma County

COAHOMA COUNTY, Mississippi — Emergency crews airlifted one person after an overturned vehicle crash late Tuesday night on Highway 61 South, the Coahoma County Fire Department said.

Fire department units were dispatched at approximately 11:32 p.m. to the area for a report of a crash involving an overturned vehicle, the department said. When firefighters arrived, they found an individual outside the vehicle suffering severe traumatic injuries.

Paramedics provided immediate medical care at the scene before the person was transported by helicopter to a regional trauma center, officials said. Fire departments from Lyon, Lula and Jonestown assisted at the scene, and Pafford EMS also responded.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Highway 61 is a major north-south route through the state and is frequently used for local and regional travel. Regional trauma centers receive patients with life-threatening injuries and provide specialized care.
