Oxford School District adjusts athletics, activities after ice storm

Oxford School District will adjust athletic and activity schedules next week as it continues to recover from a recent ice storm, Superintendent Bradley Roberson said. Students will not return to school until at least Monday, Feb. 9, and some schedules are governed by the Mississippi High School Activities Association and other state organizations, limiting the district’s control.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 2, teams and groups may offer open gyms or voluntary practices for students who are in town and whose families feel comfortable with local travel, Roberson said. No practices or activities will take place prior to Feb. 2.

Roberson said the district recognizes many families remain without heat, power or water and some may be out of town to access basic necessities. If a student cannot attend voluntary practices or activities because of storm-related challenges, that will not affect playing time or participation.

Teams scheduled for away events may participate beginning Tuesday, and Thursday, Feb. 5, will be the first day the district can host home athletic events, Roberson said. He reiterated that student safety, well-being and peace of mind remain the district’s priority and asked families to direct questions to the district office.

This is a developing situation and will be updated as more details become available.
