Oxford police use drones to survey storm-damaged waterways

OXFORD, Miss. — The Oxford Police Department said in a Facebook post that Sgt. Peter Heim and public information officer Breck Jones of the department’s Drone Unit recently partnered with Steve Brunton, stormwater engineer for the City of Oxford, to inspect areas affected by Winter Storm Fern using drone technology.

The department said the team flew over city-maintained storm ditches and creeks to identify trees and limbs that may have fallen into waterways during the recent winter weather. The post noted that such obstructions can damage sewage infrastructure, clog drainage systems and create larger flooding or environmental problems if left unchecked.

Officials said the Drone Unit allowed them to safely and efficiently survey hard-to-reach areas and give the Stormwater Division a clearer view of potential problem spots before they turn into costly repairs or community concerns.

Stormwater engineers and public works officials typically monitor drainage and infrastructure to reduce flood risk and protect water quality. The department described the operation as an example of how technology, teamwork and proactive planning help protect Oxford’s infrastructure and keep the community running smoothly after a storm.
