Oxford police teach women’s self-defense at Alpha Phi

Organizers with the Oxford Police Department taught a women’s self-defense class at the Alpha Phi sorority house yesterday, officials said. The session was part of a community outreach effort to provide practical safety skills to college women and other local residents.

Alpha Phi is a national women’s sorority with chapters at colleges and universities across the United States. Such partnerships between campus organizations and local law enforcement aim to improve personal safety awareness and build relationships between students and police.

The department said the class covers basic self-defense techniques and situational awareness designed for non-expert participants. Organizers invited other groups — including businesses, sororities, churches and community organizations — to request on-site training and provided a contact: Capt. Ben Hamilton at bhamilton@oxfordpolice.net.

Community self-defense classes have become a common public-safety tool to help people reduce risk and increase confidence. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
