Oxford police arrest man in Jackson Avenue bank robbery
Oxford police arrested a 61-year-old man in connection with a bank robbery on the 1600 block of Jackson Avenue on Jan. 21 at about 9:30 a.m., the Oxford Police Department said.
Officers responded to a call, canvassed the area and obtained security camera footage from the bank and nearby businesses as investigators worked to identify and locate a suspect, the department said. An officer located the suspect near a business on Heritage Drive and took him into custody without incident.
The suspect was identified as Paul McCarty, 61, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. McCarty was arrested and charged with armed robbery and will appear before a municipal court judge for an initial bond hearing, the department said.
“I am incredibly proud of our entire team and the way everyone came together during this incident. With limited information and a suspect who had a head start, our officers, investigators, dispatchers, and staff quickly established a perimeter, followed leads, reviewed video, and conducted extensive follow-up. Their teamwork and determination led to the suspect’s apprehension within two hours and reflect the high standard this department sets every day,” said Chief Jeff McCutchen.
The Oxford Police Department thanked the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and the University Police Department for their assistance and thanked the community for its help and cooperation. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
