Oxford man charged in attempted sexual assault, kidnapping

OXFORD — Oxford police arrested a 19-year-old man after investigating a reported attempted sexual assault that occurred Feb. 26, the Oxford Police Department said.

Police said they received a walk-in report March 5 in which a woman said she had been in the downtown area the night of Feb. 26 and was walking toward her home when a driver offered her a ride along University Avenue.

After entering the vehicle, the driver took her to another location, where he allegedly held her against her will and attempted to sexually assault her, police said. Through investigative leads developed by the victim and investigators, officers identified the suspect as Keilun Treveon Lewis, 19, of Oxford.

Lewis was arrested and charged with attempted rape and kidnapping, and bond was set by a Municipal Court judge, police said. The department said the case remains under investigation.

Police urged residents and visitors to stay alert when accepting rides, to avoid entering vehicles with people they do not know and to verify rideshare details through the app before getting in. Officials encouraged downtown visitors to use designated rideshare pickup locations near the north end of the Square by the parking garage, the west side behind the Lyric and the east side near Harrison’s and South 14th Street, saying those areas are well-lit and monitored by cameras.

Anyone with information about the incident or who may have experienced a similar incident is asked to contact the Oxford Police Department at 662-232-2400. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
