Ocean Springs police warn of phone scam impersonating officer

Ocean Springs Police Department said in a Facebook post that it has received multiple reports of an individual calling residents and identifying himself as “Officer Bennett,” leaving voicemails claiming the recipient missed court and owes money.

Police said several citizens contacted the department to verify the calls, and investigators have confirmed the messages are part of a scam. The department warned that these calls are not legitimate and urged residents not to provide personal or financial information.

The department emphasized that Ocean Springs Police will not call to demand payment and advised people not to return the call or engage with the caller. Law enforcement agencies commonly tell the public that legitimate court or police business is usually handled through official mail, in person or through verified phone numbers posted by the agency.

Anyone who receives a similar call or voicemail should report it to the Ocean Springs Police Department, the post said. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
