Ocean Springs police warn of phone scam

Ocean Springs Police Department is warning residents after receiving multiple reports of a phone scam in which a caller identifies himself as “Officer Bennett” and leaves repeated voicemails, the department said in a Facebook post.

Callers are told they missed court and owe money, the post said. “This is NOT a legitimate call from the Ocean Springs Police Department or the court system,” the department said, adding that several citizens contacted the police to verify the calls and those contacts confirmed the messages were scams.

The department urged residents not to provide personal or financial information, not to return the calls and not to engage with the caller. The post noted that the police will not call to demand money and asked anyone who receives a similar call or voicemail to report it to the Ocean Springs Police Department.

Phone scams that impersonate law enforcement or court officials are a common tactic used to extract money or information from victims. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
