NWS in Jackson issues marginal severe-weather risk for afternoon, evening
The National Weather Service in Jackson issued a marginal risk for severe weather for a portion of the state on Feb. 26, 2026, saying the threat could persist from the afternoon into the evening. The office urged residents to stay weather-aware during afternoon commutes.
“Marginal risk” is a designation the NWS uses to indicate that isolated severe storms are possible, generally limited in coverage or intensity. Such storms can produce brief periods of damaging wind or hail and may develop quickly, forecasters say.
The designation is significant for motorists and outdoor activities because conditions can change rapidly. Drivers should monitor local forecasts and radar, allow extra travel time, and avoid nonessential travel if conditions deteriorate. NWS offices routinely recommend having a plan to seek shelter if a warning is issued.
The National Weather Service is a federal agency that issues forecasts, watches and warnings to help protect life and property. Local NWS offices, including the Jackson office, coordinate with state and local emergency managers to communicate hazards to the public.
