North Mississippi roads turn icy; agency urges residents to stay home
North Mississippi roads are icy and residents are being urged to avoid travel, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said in a Facebook post Saturday.
The agency said the conditions are giving “ice rink energy” and thanked the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division and other first responders for working to keep people safe. “Stay home, stay warm, stay safe,” the department added.
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety oversees the Highway Patrol and several enforcement divisions that respond to crashes, assist stranded motorists and manage commercial vehicle safety. Icy roads can reduce traction, increase stopping distances and raise the risk of crashes and roadway incidents, officials say.
Officials generally advise drivers to delay nonessential travel during freezing conditions, drive slowly if travel is necessary and allow extra time for stopping. Motorists should monitor local traffic and weather updates and follow guidance from law enforcement and transportation departments.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
