Newton man charged with two counts of aggravated assault after shooting
NEWTON — Jakolby Kamarion Billups has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault following a shooting investigation early Wednesday, the Newton Police Department said.
Officers were called to the area of Bingham Street about 6:15 a.m. March 25 after reports of shots fired, police said. After an investigation, authorities charged Billups, who was out on a felony bond at the time of his arrest.
Billups is being held at the Newton County Jail pending his initial appearance, the department said. The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Aggravated assault is typically a felony that can involve serious bodily injury or the use of a weapon; penalties vary by jurisdiction. Police Chief McKenzie Patrick thanked officers for their work on the case and the community for helping investigators resolve the matter quickly, the department said.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
