National Weather Service warns of significant fire danger across south Mississippi

The National Weather Service office in Jackson issued a Significant Fire Danger alert for parts of south Mississippi and urged residents to avoid open burning at this time, saying common-sense precautions can reduce the chance of accidental fires.

The agency advised people to heed local burn bans, secure tow chains to prevent sparks and dispose of cigarettes properly. Those recommendations come as general warnings intended to limit ignition sources that can quickly spread when vegetation is dry.

The National Weather Service is the federal agency responsible for weather forecasts and warnings. Significant fire danger alerts typically reflect conditions such as dry fuels, low humidity and winds that increase the potential for flames to spread rapidly, posing threats to homes, timber and other property.

Officials encouraged residents to check with local authorities and follow any burn restrictions in effect. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
