Mississippi mourns Lee County SRO Rick Haggard

Mississippi is mourning the death of Lee County Sheriff’s Department school resource officer Rick Haggard, a Facebook post announced. The post said flags will fly at half-staff tomorrow in his honor.

The Facebook post asked for prayers for Haggard’s family, friends and fellow officers and said, “Our state will never forget him.” The post did not provide additional details about the circumstances of his death.

School resource officers, or SROs, are law enforcement officers assigned to work in school buildings to provide safety, crime prevention and a connection between students and police. The Lee County Sheriff’s Department is the primary law enforcement agency serving Lee County, Mississippi.

The lowering of flags to half-staff is a traditional state tribute to public servants who die in the line of duty or who have provided notable service to their communities. Details about Haggard’s death remain limited. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
