Mississippi mourns Jackson County deputy killed in line of duty

Mississippi is mourning the loss of Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Jimerson, who was killed in the line of duty last night, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said in a post on its Facebook page.

The department described Deputy Jimerson as a hero who bravely sacrificed his life while protecting and serving others and asked for prayers for his family, friends and fellow officers.

Jackson County is located on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, and the sheriff’s office is the primary law enforcement agency for the county, responsible for patrol, investigations and public safety. Line-of-duty deaths have a profound impact on small communities and on the law enforcement agencies that serve them.

Such deaths typically prompt support from other agencies and community members and may be followed by official investigations; the department’s Facebook post did not provide further details about the circumstances. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
