Mississippi governor requests federal disaster aid after winter storm
Mississippi officials said they have requested federal disaster assistance after a winter weather event that affected the state from Jan. 23–27, a move that could open the door to financial help for residents and communities.
The governor has sent an official request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the president, state officials said in a Facebook post. Officials described the submission as a critical step in the process for securing federal aid.
If the request is approved, applications for assistance would open to residents and local governments. Federal disaster declarations typically clear the way for aid such as temporary housing support, grants for uninsured losses and funds to repair public infrastructure, though specific programs and eligibility would depend on federal approval.
State officials said they will keep the public informed as the process moves forward. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
