Mississippi emergency agency warns of ice, dangerous travel as winter storm hits

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned Saturday that ice, sleet, freezing rain and snow are falling in north Mississippi and will continue across much of the state through Sunday evening.

The agency said in a Facebook post dated Jan. 24, 2026, that travel has already become dangerous in many counties and urged residents to stay home and avoid driving once roads become slick.

MEMA said numerous power outages are expected from downed trees and power lines and advised residents to have a plan to stay warm if power is lost. The agency also warned that dangerously cold temperatures will persist through early next week.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency coordinates the state’s response to disasters and issues safety updates during severe weather. Winter storms commonly cause hazardous road conditions and outages by bringing weight to tree limbs and lines, officials say.

Officials urged people to check local alerts, watch for updates and take care of family, neighbors and pets. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
